By Your Fruits…

Matthew 7:20 (KJV)
“Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.”
Questions we need to ask ourselves daily:

  • What fruits do I bear?
  • What do my fruits tell others about me?

Have you ever heard the following statement?  “And (s)he said (s)he is a Christian!”  This comment is usually spoken after someone sees a bad action (fruit) from a Christian.  Yes, the person may truly have made a mistake and is indeed deserving of forgiveness.  No, we should not allow others to determine how we act and what we do.  BUT, the fact remains that we are responsible for our actions AND as Christians, we have to behave differently (Romans 12:2).

We have bad fruits and good fruits. According to Ephesians 5:3-5 (AMP), the bad fruits are: sexual immorality, [moral] impurity [indecent, offensive behavior], greed, filthiness
silly talk,  and coarse [obscene or vulgar] joking.

Paul, the author of Ephesians, says that these bad fruits “must not even be hinted at among you, as is proper among saints [for as believers our way of life, whether in public or in private, reflects the validity of our faith].  For be sure of this: no immoral, impure, or greedy person—for that one is [in effect] an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God [for such a person places a higher value on something other than God].”  Please note, these are just some examples of bad fruits (Gal 5:19-21).

However, good fruits can be found in the fruit of the Spirit.  Galatians 15: 22-23, “But the Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility, and self-control.  There is no law against such things as these.”

When the scripture said, “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them”, it was referring to false prophets. Likewise, there exists false Christians, false teachers, and false leaders.  This is what Jesus said about what will happen to trees that bear bad fruits.  Matthew 17: 17-19 says, “…every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.  A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.  Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.”

Do not let people wonder if you are a child of God.  Do not let them say, “nuh (she)him ‘say’ (she)him a christian.”  If you have heard that comment about you, maybe its time to bear new fruits.  It is by your fruits (actions, words, lifestyle) that everyone will be able to clearly see if you are a child of God or not.  Yes, we can pretend but we will not be able to fool everyone at all times and worse, we cannot fool God.

Remember that it’s all about God and, whether we live right or wrong, it all reflects on Him.  Determine in your heart to please God and not yourself and let your tree bear good fruits.
